Week 7 Reflection
I have spent a good deal of time using Messenger to chat with other members of the class. In this past week I have chatted with David, Dianne, Georges, Nia, and Dr. Powley this week.I have found this week's topic on synchronous and asynchronous learning to be quite interesting. It was a challenge finding a way to meet the needs of 40 students in different time zones!
I have been working on my multimedia presentation, a podcast, and have found it to be a bit more challenging than I had thought it would be. I had no major problems creating the mp3 file, I am having a bit of difficulty with the RSS feed...I have a couple of days to work it out!

Karen,
I have not made it that far to learning how to use the MP3 player, I would like to do that before the semester is out. Can you save or download the broadcast to your computer first and then transfer it to an mp3 player? I thought I remember reading that in the Richardson text.
But I also enjoyed this weeks presentation because online learning and synchronous presentation has always been one of my favorite tools to use. Once I started in the online classroom, you could not pay me enough to go back to the traditional classroom. I am not the traditional student, I do not like the lecturing process, I like to read independently, receive feedback from my peers, and instructor along with processing information in this format. I am getting better with my people skills since I enjoy so much time on the internet and chat rooms. Well I never got into chat rooms until it was required in some of my classes, I always thought it was a waste of time until I learned the educational purposes it could be used for. Now I really enjoy chatting and instant messaging.
So, what do you think about the synchronous tools? I believe that messenger, for example, is one tool that can be used easily to bridge distance. With it we can talk as easily as if we're in the same room. But, do you really think that these tools can replace good instruction?
Hey Karen:
I see that you posted your podcast as am mp3. That is what I did. The one that I did at school was too long. It was good to chat with you this week. See ya. Dianne
Phyllis,
I did not forget you! I simply made this post beore I talked to you.
Karen
Nia,
I never did well in the traditional classroom setting, and much prefer the online environment for learning. For that matter, I much prefer the online environment in most aspects of my life!
The only way that I know to put a podcast or music on my iPod is to download it to my computer first.
Karen
David,
I love messenger...I have always enjoyed Instant Messaging. It makes me feel connected without actually having to be good at socializing. Part of the affect of ADHD is not doing well in social situations. Online (except in the video chats) I do not need to worry about the proper facial expressions, looking people in the eye, and responding in the proper time frame.
I do not think that messenger services will ever totally replace good teaching, but they can certainly add another component to the online classroom. I also think that if teachers in brick and mortar classrooms provided this type of chat to their students it would be beneficial.
Karen
Yolanda,
I will pull together my list of Kindergarten sites...give me a bit of time!
Karen
Dianne,
I thought that I had a good RSS feed, but I cannot seem to get it to do what I think it is supposed to do! I will keep working on it!
Karen
Karen,
I have been having problems last week with connectivity. Too much lightning and bad weather in general! One of the hubs in the university burned out and it was replaced three days later! At home I had problems with my OS. It seems like it were going to crash. I will have to reinstall it, but I will postpone that till the course ends. So I have not been able to communicate with most of you! My apologies! Hope I can keep participation normal from now on. Best wishes!
Creating a podcast can be a bit tricky. But I am sure that once you get the 'hang' of it you will find it easy to do in the future.
Read the instructions carefully, don't try to figure things out yourself.
